In 2007, Robert Downey, Jr. set me off on a journey, soon after the trailer for the first Iron Man was released. In interviews he gave at the time, he mentioned a “pit crew” of people helping him: his wife, a yoga teacher, a sensei and a psychiatrist. He needed a pit crew, he said, because he was "...not a Model T, but a Ferrari, and it took a pit crew to keep him on the road."
He wasn't the only one. I needed a pit crew, too. A good one.
This insight was the missing piece I'd been looking for. Like many folks I knew, I'd been burned-out far too many times. I found ways to recover and get back on track, but nothing lasted for long. I'd hit burnout again eventually. I was worried about that because recovering was getting harder each time.
Thanks to my favorite superhero, I found a better way. He helped me see that support from others was something we all need. It helps each of us individually and then, helps all of us collectively. That 'aha' moment changed my life. It led to more than a decade of research with people ages 7-87 and it's changed lives for the better.
Want to join us? If so, there are a few things to know at the start.
Here's the first: what Robert Downey, Jr. called a “pit crew,” I call “networks.” You have eight networks supporting you as a working adult. If you have children, you're managing five support networks for them. If you have a pet, add one more because yes, pets have networks, too.
I call the first five of the eight networks birthright networks because your parents created them to meet your basic needs. You could not thrive without them. In fact, you could not have survived. This was obvious when you were an infant, but it remains true throughout life. These networks changed as you grew up, but you will never outgrow your needs for what these networks provide.
As you enter adulthood, you progress through milestones considered to be markers of maturity: leaving home, finishing school, becoming financially independent, finding a mate, and having a child. As you do, you mature into three coming-of-age networks. These networks do not replace your birthright networks; they build upon them.
Becoming a NetworkSage involves three steps:
In the course of my research, I've identified the ways people do that.
The data from NetworkSage is a 'big reveal' for everyone and with that data, people have been successful in getting a better education for children with special needs, lowering household expenses, increasing income, avoiding expensive senior care and improving their health.
Companies who use the data have new insights about customers and have used those to improve their customer service in public image.
